Virtual technology is a rapidly developing field of study that covers a variety of domains and applications. However, VR has certain limitations and obstacles that must be overcome as it continues to develop and mature. VR is not available due to its price and associated hardware. There are also technical issues, including the lack of standardization.

VR is a method to develop by experiencing situations that are risky or difficult in real life. For example fear of flight or exposure to a stressful situation. This is especially useful in mental health treatments like PTSD. VR can assist patients in overcoming these situations in a safe way.

VR can also aid in professional training, allowing athletes to work on their abilities without having to travel to specific training facilities. This can be particularly helpful in the development of perceptual-cognitive capabilities including motor and spatial skills.

There is still much work to be done in areas of theory and methodology as well as pedagogical methods. In particular there is a need to define the way in which the diverse features of both the technical and experiential aspects of VR interact with learning outcomes in various professional training contexts. A thorough review of the literature on this subject will help to inform strategic resource allocation by identifying the specific VR features that are essential for different types of skill training.
